Press Release] Yame Gyokuro Tea Product Containing GABA, "Everyday Healthy Gyokuro Habits," Accepted for Notification as a Food with Functional Claims

We are pleased to announce that our powdered Yame Gyokuro product "Mainichi Kenko Gyokuro Hattori" has been accepted for notification by the Consumer Affairs Agency as a food with functional claims.
GABA is a powdered tea product containing Yame gyokuro and GABA, and is a food with a functional claim that states "GABA has been reported to have the function of lowering blood pressure in people with high blood pressure. GABA has been reported to lower blood pressure in people with high blood pressure" as a functionally indicated food product.
The product is scheduled to go on sale in June on the "Kyushu Oyakase Honpo" food shopping site operated by our company.

The blood pressure lowering effect was evaluated in terms of systolic blood pressure (the maximum blood pressure indicated when the heart contracts) and diastolic blood pressure (the minimum blood pressure indicated when the heart expands) indices. Both indices determined that foods containing 12.3 mg or more of GABA had a significant effect (statistically, not coincidentally, a meaningful effect) on lowering blood pressure in healthy individuals with elevated blood pressure compared to foods containing no GABA.

What is Food with Functional Claims?
Foods that can be labeled with functional claims were previously limited to Food for Specified Health Uses (Tokuho) approved individually by the government and Food with Nutrient Function Claims that conform to the government's standards. The Food with Health Claims System was established in April 2015. This product has been notified to the Consumer Affairs Agency as a product that displays the fact that a specific health purpose can be expected under the responsibility of the business operator. However, unlike Food for Specified Health Uses, the product has not undergone individual review by the Consumer Affairs Agency.
