■Where you buy food/food products (select 3)

Supermarkets were the most common place to purchase food (88%), followed by drugstores (DgS) (41.7%) and convenience stores (37.5%). Supermarkets" are indispensable stores for consumers in their daily lives, and it is apparent that they use "drugstores," "convenience stores," and "discount stores" in different ways depending on the situation.
Convenience stores and home-delivery/shopping for meals showed a large difference between men and women. Nearly half of men (45.8%) use convenience stores on a regular basis, compared to 29.2% of women (29.2%). The overall usage rate of "Delivery/Home meal" was low, but the rate was high for women (7.4%) compared to men (3.4%).
By age group, the highest percentage of respondents in their 30s used drugstores, at 47.3%, about 15 points higher than the 31.7% of respondents in their 20s. By area, the use of drugstores varied: Oita Prefecture, which has the fewest stores per 100,000 residents* among the prefectures in Kyushu, had the highest rate of use at 57.2%, while Fukuoka Prefecture, which has the most stores*, had the lowest rate at 36.1%. Oita Prefecture also had the highest use of department stores at 4.8%, while Kagoshima Prefecture, which has the largest number of stores (*), had only 1.5%. Fresh foods" (75.7%) was the most frequently purchased food item, while "bread, rice balls, and prepared foods" (52.8%) also accounted for more than a majority. With the advancement of freezing technology and the increase in frozen vending machines in the Corona Disaster, one out of three respondents also use "frozen foods" (37.4%).
A distinctive feature by age group was that the highest rate of frozen food use was 40.8% among those in their 40s, while the lowest rate was 30.5% among those in their 20s. On the other hand, those in their 20s had the lowest rate at 30.5%. By area, fresh food was purchased the most in Nagasaki Prefecture at 80.0%. Saga Prefecture was the most frequent purchaser of "boxed lunches" and "bread, rice balls, and prepared foods. Retort pouch and instant foods" were purchased the most in Miyazaki Prefecture at 46.9%.

Stores that would be nice to have nearby (multiple responses)

The top three types of stores they would like to have nearby were "stores where they can buy freshly prepared lunch boxes and side dishes" (52.4%), "direct sales stores and sales events where they can buy fresh local products" (37.7%), and "stores and restaurants where they can take out snacks to drink at home" (33.8%). As many of the respondents purchase fresh food at supermarkets on a daily basis, their requests indicated a high need for bento boxes and prepared foods that can be eaten in a short amount of time. By area, 61.9% of respondents in Miyazaki Prefecture were most in need of "stores where you can buy freshly prepared lunch boxes and side dishes. Miyazaki Prefecture also had more requests for "24-hour frozen food vending machines" (21.8%) than any other prefecture. Oita (36.1%) and Nagasaki (33.9%) prefectures had significantly higher requests than the other prefectures for "events where visitors can purchase gourmet foods from all over Japan. Sales by mobile supermarkets" was high in Miyazaki (10.2%) and Nagasaki (9.1%) prefectures.
