Repetitive stock-out tasks involving palletized goods
This happened when I toured the back-of-house area at a client’s fruit and vegetable wholesale business.
I witnessed workers unloading heavy fruit from large pallets (1,100 × 1,100 mm). There were many female part-time workers, and the repetitive daily tasks are quite physically demanding.
When I spoke with them, I learned that some of them were actually suffering from lower back pain, and their bodies were under significant strain.
Although picking items from large pallets may seem efficient at first glance, it has become clear that, when considering the fatigue of the staff performing the work, overall operational efficiency is actually declining.
Carry in smaller batches to lighten the load instead of all at once!
Proposals for Operational Improvements Through the Use of Small Carts
Therefore, to reduce the burden of transporting items from the workbench to the pallet, we proposed a process improvement that utilizes lightweight, highly maneuverable “flat-bed carts (small hand trucks).”
Carrying heavy fruit crates while in an awkward position not only puts significant strain on the lower back and knees but also carries the risk of dropping or damaging valuable merchandise. Therefore, we proposed a system that involves dividing the load into manageable portions for each trip and using small, easy-to-maneuver carts.
It can be easily operated even in workspaces with limited room, and because it significantly reduces physical strain, anyone can work safely. We have explained how creating a “work environment that minimizes fatigue” ultimately leads to maintaining work speed and improving overall efficiency.
