Remote work has spread rapidly throughout Japan due to the impact of the novel coronavirus.
Marushin is no exception—we’ve been implementing remote work since April!
Remote work refers to performing work duties outside the office. All you need are tools such as a computer or tablet, and an internet connection for communication.
Communication between remote workers and on-site employees is crucial when working remotely. We cannot allow work to come to a standstill simply because we’ve switched to remote work. Therefore, by utilizing an “online conferencing system”—widely regarded as user-friendly—we were able to conduct daily business communications and meetings smoothly.

・Surprisingly, I was able to work in much the same way as I usually do. I was also able to reevaluate my approach to work.
・I was able to concentrate on my work in a quiet environment.
・We can give instructions online while viewing each other’s work screens, which makes things easy to understand. It’s also easy to share documents and take notes.
・No waiting in line for the restroom, and you can adjust the air conditioning temperature however you like!
・I no longer have to commute, so I have more free time in my life.
・I slept longer, and my body felt well-rested.
・During lunch breaks, I can cook my own meals and do a little housework.
・Sitting all day has led to a lack of exercise and weight gain. Since my desk at work is different, I’ve hurt my back!
・Depending on your home internet connection, the connection may be poor, which can cause web meetings to be unstable.
・I can't engage in small talk or other casual conversations.
・There were no issues within the department itself, but it was a bit inconvenient that communication with other departments had to be done over the phone.
・It took a long time to check the physical samples.
・Children or pets may get in the way
It seems everyone is able to work just as usual, surprisingly enough.
While having a zero commute made life easier both mentally and physically and improved their quality of life, some people also reported that, depending on their home internet connection and equipment, it made it difficult to carry out certain tasks.
Remote work eliminates the barrier of physical distance. It makes it possible to do business with companies located far away or overseas, and allows companies to recruit top talent regardless of where they live. As Japanese people’s mindsets and lifestyles continue to change in the post-COVID era, companies may also need to adapt their work styles to keep pace with the times.
