The Importance of Displaying Photos to Keep 5S Activities Moving Forward
As you continue with 5S activities, you will inevitably encounter stagnation due to routine and a lack of new ideas. When you first start these activities, there are plenty of areas to improve, but as improvements progress, you will inevitably run out of ideas and shift from improvement to maintenance.
So, to prevent our activities from stagnating, let’s incorporate a third-party perspective. Unfortunately, when people keep repeating the same things, everything tends to become a mere formality. From a third-party perspective, they might wonder, “Why are we going through all this trouble?”—and that could provide clues for improvement.
1. Whether the place is pretty or dirty, let's just keep taking pictures.
2. Paste the photos you took onto a large sheet of paper.
3. Post it in a place where it will be easily seen.
4. Ask as many people as possible to write comments on sticky notes and post them. They can write anything—problems, suggestions for improvement, ideas, and so on.
5. Next, let’s set priorities. We’ll address the issues in order, starting with those that require immediate improvement.
When making improvements, be sure to use an improvement sheet or similar tool to take "before" and "after" photos.
