Frozen lunchboxes," which offer many advantages such as nutritional balance and preservation, have become a hot topic.
With the increasing popularity of frozen foods and frozen vending machines, "frozen boxed lunches" are also attracting attention. While most of the frozen foods in widespread use today are provided as single items, the use of frozen bento as a combination of well-balanced menus is gradually expanding. Frozen meal delivery (home-delivery meals) services, which have traditionally been provided mainly for the elderly and those with dietary restrictions, are also becoming increasingly popular.
Frozen bento is a boxed meal packaged in individual servings that can be frozen and stored. Because they are frozen, they last longer and can be easily prepared by simply defrosting or boiling in hot water when eaten. Many products are supervised by dietitians and tend to be nutritionally balanced.
As with conventional meal delivery services, the target population includes not only the elderly and those with dietary restrictions, but also an increasing number of pregnant women, families with infants and toddlers, households that live alone and have difficulty cooking, or those who want to lose weight.
Advantages include not only eliminating the need for food shopping and cooking, but also the fact that the nutritional balance and calories are listed so there are fewer health concerns, and the fact that the food can be easily prepared and eaten when desired with a long shelf life is also accepted.
Disadvantages include the fact that you cannot eat what you want that day like you can with a regular boxed lunch, it takes a certain amount of time for the food to arrive, and you may become bored with the menu if you use the service for a long time. In some cases, there is a membership fee or annual fee to use the service, and in other cases, it is more expensive than boxed lunches from grocery stores.
Nevertheless, the quality of frozen lunches has improved dramatically, thanks in part to advances in freezing technology, and some of these disadvantages will be eliminated as the use of frozen lunches becomes more widespread. The future of frozen bento lunches will be closely watched.
